Cake Decorating Designs
Can anyone help me with cake decorating?
Im making a gears of war cake and im finding it very difficult to get the design right. Would it be possible to make a stencil and use some sort of spray on food coloring, or maybe use fondant somehow? Im looking for any creative ideas. Its for my video game obsessed boyfriend’s 21st birthday this friday. Here is kinda what im going for.

it looks to me like the design shown in your attached pic was done by piping out the design, then using a damp artists brush, smoothed out.Probably a smaller brush was used for the grooves & shadows, allowing the chocolate icing beneath to show thru.If you want to try laying a fondant design over a buttercream cake, roll out some red fondant.Place onto a sheet of cardboard lightly dusted with corn starch.Cut out the basic design.Outer pieces can be cut away with a pizza cutter-smaller pieces should be removed with an x-acto knife (found at any craft store or craft dept.at Wal-mart)When you have a finished piece, let it dry overnight. When you are ready to apply your fondant, make sure it is loosened from the cardboard. If it is sticking,GENTLY run an icing spatula under fondant.Slowly slide fondant onto cake, keeping as close to the cake as you can to avoid cracking. Now you can add the lines and shadows with artists brushes and food color,or you can buy food color markers-try Michaels or Hobby Lobby.(Hobby Lobby usually has a 40% off coupon in the Sunday paper,or you can go to their web site & print one off.) If you have any questions or problems,I can be reached @ www.myspace.comkennybakescakes.Good luck,& may the fondant be with you!

Things You SHOULD Know About Cake Decorating
Ah, the joys of cake decorating. The pros make it look so easy. Truth is, Decorating a Cake is an art and one that isn’t easily mastered. Sure, anybody can toss a glob of frosting on a cake but the true artist turns that cake into a visual masterpiece. Well, if you’re one of those aspiring cake decorating artists, this article should get you on your way to Decorating Cakes that look good enough not to want to eat.
At the very top of the list, and I do mean the VERY top, is making sure that you have the right tools for the job. You wouldn’t try to hammer a nail into a wall with a screwdriver would you? (Though I have seen many people try) It is absolutely critical that you have the right tools. What are they? Well, it all depends on what you’re decorating. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, most supplies come in kits and not all kits are going to do all jobs.
For example, let’s say you want to have some writing on your cake. You’re going to probably need some ready to use glitter piping gel. Some stencils will probably come in handy as well. What if you want to make a layer cake? Well, you’re going to need a couple of Cake Pans. Make sure they are both the same size. Cake pans and very sharp knives are probably the two things you’re not going to be able to live without if you’re going to do a proper job on your cake decorating.
Aside from the right tools, you want to make sure that you have a specific idea in mind before you even begin. The last thing you want to do is just start slapping stuff on your cake. Trust me, it won’t come out very good unless you are a natural artist. To this end, having a cake decorating design ready made is going to help a lot. Fortunately, there are tons of kits with ready made designs that you can purchase at any specialty store or even online. It’s not a crime to use a pre-made design. With so many to choose from, it’s unlikely that your guests will have seen yours.

I’m throwing a surprise birthday party for a family friend and i’m planning to make a cake. (just a a box-cake) I have no cake decorating skills at all but i want this cake to look nice. I’m 17..and have probably only decorated about 5 cakes in my life-time. i can’t even think of a cute design for the cake. The birthday girl will be 33yrs old..any ideas or tips? please help..
I have no time for decorating cakes so what I learn to do is find things to add.
I did not know how to make cake flowers so I would buy some carnations and would line the base of the cake. Then a few years ago my nephew wanted to make a ginger bread house for christmas we have made dozens and we need a lot of candy these are magic. You can make something simple and use any style of candy and it looks like you work for hours.
You can use any kind of candy like snow caps or any flat candy something with a lot of color and just decorate the outside of the cake.
Then on the top you can put a small container like a basket or pail of things she likes. You can even cut a circle in the middle of the cake and put some flowers there.
Just remember that when you decorate a cake you have to let it cool down for the best frosting; I put a lite coat then put it back in the fridge then finish frosting it. This way the crumbs don’t get in the frosting.
