Cake Decorating Help!!?

I am baking a cake for my son’s 6th birthday. I have tried the past few years to do this, as bakeries can be expensive, and Cake Kits can be hard to find, so I’d rather custom make my cake to my preference. But the problem I am having is when I bake my cake it comes out of the oven it is lop-sided. How can I bake the perfect smooth even cake. Even if I cut some off the top to even it out, the cake crumbs show through the icing. So can somebody please help me and give me some great cake baking and decorating tips. The cake this year is Mario vs. Sonic at the Olympics. I always make homemade buttercream icing. All help is greatly appreciated!!
So, I need to have the cake finished on Friday,I can bake it on Thursday and decorate it late Thursday evening? Would that work out accuratley if I freeze it before decorating??

Your oven isn’t level. A quick fix is to fold up tin foil and put it under the edge of your rack on the low side, front and back. Use a level if you have one, if not then use a measuring cup with the lines on it. Also bake your cake at 250 and it will rise more evenly without the big hump in the middle.
