Cake Decorating technique?

What is the name of the cake decorating technique were you pipe little dots to form an image on the cake? I’m guessing this was really hot in the 80′s cause my mom used to decorate my cakes this way when I was younger.
The dots had a little texture unto it. I think my mom used a nozzle with a star tip or what ever you call it.

I think you mean stars instead of dots, right? Is it where you use a shaped pan and use that shape to create an image using different colors of frosting? It’s getting quite popular now, check out http://www.wilton.com/ to see what I mean.
